The Last Mile | Volkswagen

“Tis better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all” – Alfred Lord Tennyson

Volkswagen rev up the emotions whilst holding back the mechanical oil riddled tears and share with us a colourful and triumphant eulogy to their iconic car, The Beetle.

Through the guise of a minimalist flat colour design language, the story of the Beetle is celebrated via the various milestone moments of one of its owners. From being the first car the owner learnt to drive, trips to the drive in cinema through to helping them get their pregnant wife to hospital to give birth. The film serves as a snapshot of the historical and cultural changes that have occurred during the Beetle’s 70 year lifespan.

The use of ‘Let it be’ by ‘The Beatles’ doesn’t just work for the film only because it’s a film about a car called the Beetle but rather it acts as the perfect swan song and acknowledgement of a future to come. This is further signified by the sight of the windmills that prompts the Beetle to go for its last mile. Additionally, the end frame which features the new distinct headlight design now seen across Volkswagen’s ID range of electric cars, further signals the future ahead.

The creation of this film could be seen as a serious statement of intent from Volkswagen. By getting rid of such an iconic and revered car, it demonstrates their level of commitment to the green revolution within the automotive space. If this was a game of roulette then this is one of those rare moments, where a belief stricken player cashes in all their chips and bets their future (and carbon emissions) on double zero green.
